Tinnitus Supplements: Which Ingredients Actually Have Research Behind Them
Search "supplements for tinnitus" and you'll find dozens of formulas promising to quiet the ringing. Most share a similar ingredient list, and most sales pages cite research without mentioning an inconvenient detail: no supplement has been shown in rigorous trials to cure or eliminate tinnitus. What some ingredients do have is evidence for adjacent mechanisms — circulation, oxidative stress, sleep, and the stress response that makes ringing feel louder.
This guide goes ingredient by ingredient and separates the three categories that matter: reasonable evidence, mixed or weak evidence, and evidence that a specific group benefits (which is different from everyone benefiting).

The Dose Problem Nobody Mentions
This is worth stating plainly, because it applies to nearly every tinnitus formula on the market. Research findings are dose-specific: a trial showing benefit from 240 mg of ginkgo extract tells you nothing about a product containing an undisclosed fraction of that inside a blend. When a supplement lists impressive ingredients but hides the amounts, the honest conclusion isn't "it doesn't work" — it's "there is no way to know whether it delivers what the research used."

What Has Stronger Evidence Than Any Supplement
An honest guide has to say this: the interventions with the most robust research for tinnitus aren't supplements at all.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — the best-supported intervention. It doesn't remove the sound; it substantially reduces the distress and attention it commands, which is what most people actually want.
- Sound therapy and masking — background sound that reduces the contrast between the ringing and silence.
- Treating hearing loss — hearing aids often reduce tinnitus perception in people who have both, and the ACHIEVE trial data on hearing and cognition gives a second reason to take it seriously.
- Protecting your hearing — the cheapest intervention of all, and the only one that prevents the problem from worsening.
When to See a Doctor Instead of Buying a Supplement
Tinnitus is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and some causes are treatable. See a physician or audiologist if the ringing is in only one ear, appeared suddenly, is pulsing in time with your heartbeat, or comes with dizziness or hearing loss. Those patterns can point to conditions that need medical attention — and no supplement addresses them.
